BMW Introduces The New R 1300 GS Adventure Bike
If you’re an adventure riding or long-distance touring motorcycle enthusiast, BMW Motorrad offers much to sink your teeth into with the 2025 BMW R 1300 GS Adventure. Bigger and boasting numerous changes from its R 1250 GS Adventure predecessor, the bike features four variants with a powerful new boxer engine, an optional Automated Shift Assistant (ASA) system, and a redesigned chassis.
A Harmonious Combination
Christof Lischka, head of BMW Motorrad Development, says the R 1300 GS Adventure is ready to set a new bar for large adventure bikes.
“The big GS is not only visually different from its almost dainty sister,” says Lischka. “Never before have seating comfort, ergonomics, and wind and weather protection been so harmoniously combined with precise handling, exceptional suspension comfort, and smooth running.”
A Beefier Boxer
BMW says the bike’s new 1,300-cc power plant is the most powerful serial production BMW boxer engine ever. The engine is rated for 145 maximum horsepower (107 kilowatts) at 7,750 rpm and develops 110 pounds-foot (149 newton-meters) of maximum torque at 6,500 rpm. These numbers represent roughly 10-HP (7.5-kW) and 5-lbf-ft (6.8-N-m) improvements over the R 1250 GS Adventure’s engine.
BMW changed the position of the R 1300 GS Adventure’s new 6-speed transmission to below the engine rather than behind it, helping save space and reduce the basic engine weight by 8.6 pounds (3.9 kilograms) compared to previous models. Better handling is another benefit of the position change, as BMW says there’s now a greater concentration of mass toward the overall center of gravity.
Desirable Options
BMW offers numerous performance and driver-assistance systems, including Engine Drag Torque Control, Dynamic Brake Control, Dynamic Traction Control, and Hill Start Control. Riders can also select from Rain, Road, Eco, and Enduro modes, the latter of which is geared toward off-road riding. Customers can also add Riding Modes Pro, which provides Dynamic, Dynamic Pro, and Enduro Pro riding modes. Riders can adapt the latter two modes to their needs.
You’ll also want to consider the Adaptive Headlight Pro and ASA options. BMW says the former “creates a particularly wide and homogeneous illumination of the road.” ASA eliminates the need to use a hand lever to operate the clutch manually. It also offers several shift modes, including D, in which gear changes happen automatically based on the riding mode, engine speed, throttle position, and lean angle parameters.
