Honda Brings Retro Trailbike-Inspired Dax 125 miniMoto Model To U.S. Buyers
If the Honda Dax 125 looks familiar, it’s no coincidence. The newest member of the Honda miniMoto family pays homage to the 1969 Honda CT70, a popular trail bike model in the U.S. during the 1970s, also known as the Trail 70. Previously available in Europe, the Dax 125 is now available to U.S. buyers with two color options: Pearl Glittering Blue and Pearl Gray.
An Appropriate Return
Colin Miller, American Honda public relations manager, says features such as a “T-bone” frame, chunky tires, and folding handlebar were highlights of the Trail 70’s unique and easily recognizable look.
“The model holds a warm spot in the hearts of many American customers, so it's appropriate that it make a return in the form of the Dax 125, which honors the original while introducing modern technology, performance, and reliability," he says.
Nostalgia On Display
The Dax 125 gets much of its retro aesthetic from its pressed-steel T-bone frame. It houses a 1-gallon (3.8-liter) fuel tank and connects to a thick two-up seat with a 31.5-inch (80-centimeter) height. Vintage trail bike enthusiasts will also appreciate the balloon-like tires, blacked-out 12-inch (30.5-centimeter) rims, and high-set chrome-finished handlebar. The round headlight is also classic-looking but provides modern LED performance.
Twin rear shocks and a fetching dirt bike-inspired upswept muffler also ooze retro coolness. Honda says the muffler, which features a drilled, slotted chrome heat shield, pays tribute to vintage trail bikes and helps create a wide powerband.
The Dax 125 Inspected
Like the Honda Super Cub 125, the Dax 125 has a 124-cc fuel-injected, air-cooled engine. According to the manufacturer, the bike can reach a 55 mph (89 km/h) cruise speed with two riders. The vehicle has a 4-speed semi-automatic transmission, but instead of using a clutch lever, the operator pushes up or down on a heel-toe shift lever.
A front-wheel anti-locking brake system (ABS) helps riders come to safe stops. Additional safety implementations include a chrome grab rail for the passenger and a drive chain cover that prevents loose clothing from being pulled in. Customers can add an optional rear rack and heated grips to boost their carrying capacity and comfort.
