BMW CE 02 x Vagabund Electric Bike Oozes Retro-Future Vibes
Have you ever tried to conceptualize what “retro-future” would look like if it took the form of an electric motorcycle designed for riding in urban settings? Austria’s Vagabund Moto design studio has done the work for you with its BMW CE 02 x Vagabund, a product of a collaboration with BMW Motorrad Austria.
The bike is based on the BMW CE 02, which BMW introduced last year and dubs the “eParkourer.” That refers to parkour, or activities where participants run, roll, climb, and jump around obstacles to find the quickest, most efficient route. Vagabund Moto’s unique customization follows the CE 04 Vagabund Moto Concept, a surfing-inspired customization based on the BMW CE 04 electric scooter unveiled in 2023.
The Past & Future Meet
Vagabund Moto founder and Managing Director Paul Brauchart says that for the CE 02 x Vagabund, his company sought to combine the futuristic original design of the BMW CE 02 with retro vibes to elicit a “familiar feeling” in those viewing the bike.
Among the vibes is an OB-4 Magic Radio, an ultra-thin Bluetooth speaker from Swedish consumer electronics manufacturer Teenage Engineering. BMW says the musical integration underlines custom bikes' young, creative philosophy. The bike also features an “electric exhaust” on the left side, where riders can store an umbrella. Skateboard grip tape on the running board honors the bike’s parkour style.
The BMW CE 02
The CE 02 x Vagabund may be a “piece of street art,” as Vagabund Moto states, but the CE 02 that serves as its foundation provides some impressive performance capabilities. Two 48-volt, 1.96-kilowatt-hour air-cooled lithium-ion batteries supply power to an air-cooled synchronous motor that generates up to 15 horsepower (11 kilowatts) of maximum power and 40.6 pounds-foot (55 newton-meters) of torque.
Riders can look forward to built-in Automatic Stability Control (ASC) and Recuperative Stability Control (RSC), keyless riding functionality, and access to Surf and Flow riding modes. BMW includes a third Flash mode in an optional Highline package, which includes heated grips, an external quick charger, and other extras. The bike has a 59-mile (95-kilometer) maximum range and can zip from 0 to 30 mph (48 km/h) in 3 seconds.
