2023 Honda Trail125 Primed For City Street & Trail Treks With New Engine & Color Scheme

Honda has returned its retro-flavored, user-friendly Trail125 model to the MiniMoto lineup for 2023, complete with a new Pearl Organic Green color scheme. The manufacturer says that despite the compact bike’s authentic, vintage appearance inspired by Honda CT models of the 1960s, it packs state-of-the-technology for steady-sure performance and modern riding comfort. This includes a new air-cooled, single-cylinder, four-stroke 124-cc engine with overhead camshaft. The power plant is the same one Honda gave the Super Cub last year; Honda says it provides pleasurable performance through the entire rev range and terrific fuel economy.

To better protect the Trail125 during trail rides, Honda built an engine skid plate and two front brush-guard tubes into the bike. (Photo courtesy of Honda.)

    Drawing Comparisons

The Trail125’s easy-to-reach, under-seat, 1.4-gallon (5.3-liter) fuel tank is 0.4 gal (1.5 L) larger than the Super Cub’s and provides an impressive, estimated range of up to 220 miles (354 kilometers). The Trail125 also has a longer intake and tuned exhaust that contribute to improved low- and midrange power, as well as a three-tooth-larger rear sprocket (38 teeth) for lower gearing. Honda's newest MiniMoto has a longer wheelbase (49.5 inches; 1,257 millimeters), a longer front-suspension stroke (4.3 in.; 109 mm), and higher ground clearance (6.5 in; 165 mm) and seat height (31.5 in.; 800 mm). Combine all of this with features like a reinforced steel backbone chassis and head pipe, upswept handlebar, dual-sport knobby tires, twin rear shocks with 3.4 in. (86 mm) of travel, 220-mm front and 190-mm rear disc brakes, and ABS, and you have a MiniMoto that’s ready to take on bumpy road surfaces and challenging trails in comfort and control.

    Modern Touches

Although the Trail125’s aesthetic harkens to another time, the bike incorporates numerous modern components that riders should appreciate, including push-button electric starting (backed by a secondary kickstart lever, just in case). Also onboard is an automatic centrifugal clutch that lets riders move through the bike’s four speeds using a traditional foot shifter but eliminates the need for a clutch lever. Another example is the bike’s headlight, which fairly drips old-school visual appeal but is equipped with LED technology for better illumination. Only the Trail125’s multifunction digital instrument panel gives away its true, high-tech nature.
