BMW’s 2023 S 1000 RR Uses Winglets To Generate Downforce & Convert More Drive Power Into Acceleration
The composite plastic winglets on BMW’s new S 1000 RR generate 37.7 pounds of aerodynamic downforce at 186 miles per hour. BMW says the winglets’ downforce counteracts the front wheel’s tendency to lift off when accelerating, resulting in less intervention from the bike’s dynamic traction control (DTC) and greater acceleration.
Sporty Specs
The S 1000 RR’s four-stroke four-cylinder engine generates 205 horsepower (153 kilowatts) at 13,750 rpm. BMW’s ShiftCam variable valve timing technology is onboard to help the engine switch between modes that optimize load change damping for more precise shifting. The S 1000 RR also includes BMW’s six-stage DTC, with a new steering angle sensor that measures the drift angle and enables Brake Slide Assist when decelerating and Slide/Slip Control when accelerating. Different DTC settings let riders optimize settings for their tires and track conditions. The S 1000 RR’s maximum speed is 188 mph (302.5 km/h).
New For 2023
BMW says the new air box up front optimizes airflow better than the 2022 model did. For sporty handling, the 2023 BMW S 1000 RR can be fitted with Bridgestone’s Battlax Hypersport S22 tires with a state-of-the-art tread compound and structure for a superior surface grip. The sport bike’s new M brakes are derived from the equipment on BMW’s racing team. Last but not least, the bike boasts a 6.5-inch TFT display configured to always start on the last screen you used.
