Honda has upgraded its Pioneer 1000 sport and recreation and utility side-by-sides with a more comfortable driving experience and a pair of new models. The new Pioneer 1000 Trail and Forest versions join the existing Deluxe and EPS models in the three- and five-person UTV family.

All Pioneer 1000 models for 2022 receive a laundry list of upgrades that includes (but isn’t limited to) extra mid- and upper-rpm power, smoother gear shifting and revised gear ratios, more storage and easier access to the under-seat compartment, more cupholders (including a tumbler-sized one), reduced steering effort, simpler door netting with mesh that’s easier to see through, pre-wired accessory connectors and dash switches, more durable driveshaft boots, and a new black-on-white dash meter with a clutch indicator, battery voltage meter, and CAN communication indicator. The new Pioneer 1000 lineup will be available in April 2022.

“When it comes to rec/utility side-by-sides, Honda has the needs of every power sports customer covered,” says American Honda Manager of Sports and Experiential, Brandon Wilson. “The Pioneer 1000 is the most technology-laden flagship rec/utility platform on the market, and it’s even better now, thanks to important upgrades. Best of all, the new Trail and Forest versions deliver even more enjoyment for customers seeking specific experiences.”

    Four Trim Levels

The new Pioneer 1000 Trail is designed for off-road adventures with friends and family, Honda says. The Matte Silver model is built to tackle trails and streams with adjustable FOX Quick Switch 3 shocks and a 4,500-pound (2,041-kilogram) winch. It comes with an accessory power outlet in its bed, interior floor lighting, aluminum cut-contrast wheels, a rearview mirror, and more.

The Honda Phantom Camo finish on the new Pioneer 1000 Forest model is a giveaway that this niche UTV is intended for hunting and other outdoor pursuits. It has a self-leveling rear suspension, an important consideration when hauling big game out of the hunting grounds. Its shock absorbers are by ZF Sachs in the rear and KYB up front, where there are new dual-rate front springs. Like the Trail, the Forest has preinstalled factory-installed accessories including a bed outlet, floor light, and 4,500-lb winch. The Forest also sports a full front bumper, as well as twin bed lights and black aluminum wheels.

The Pioneer 1000 Deluxe offers versatility and color options including Red, Olive, Gray Resin (three-seat), and Reactor Blue (five-seat). KYB shocks regulate dual-rate springs in the front and triple-rate springs to the rear. The three-seat version has adjustable-preload rear shocks, whereas the five-seat Pioneer 1000-5 Deluxe includes a self-leveling rear suspension.

Honda markets its Pioneer 1000 EPS as a budget-friendly edition of the UTV. It has steel wheels and is available in Red and Olive.

    Grip, Go, & “Whoa”

With its power increase, the 2022 Pioneer 1000 can tow up to 2,500 lbs (1,134 kg), a 25% increase. Its bed capacity is rated at 1,000 lbs (454 kg), except in California, where it has a 600-lb (272-kg) rating. The UTV’s independent double-wishbone suspension has 10.6 inches (269 millimeters) of travel in the front and 10 in. (254 mm) in the rear. Its ground clearance is 12.8 in. (325 mm) for the Trail and Forest and 13.6 in. (345 mm) for the Deluxe and EPS. Dual 210-mm (8.3-in.) front and rear disc brakes tame forward momentum.

The Pioneer 1000 is powered by a 999-cc, liquid-cooled, two-cylinder Unicam engine with fuel injection. Its six-speed automatic Dual Clutch Transmission comes with paddle shifters and three shift modes. All four trim levels come with 14-in. (356-mm) wheels, six-ply OTR Dirt Master tires, and electric power steering.

Honda’s i-4WD intelligent four-wheel-drive brake traction control system comes standard on the Pioneer 1000 Trail and Forest models. The manufacturer says it provides the traction of a locked front differential with the lighter feel and easier steering of an unlocked diff. The Pioneer 1000 also offers a Differential Lock mode, a Turf mode to protect lawn surfaces, and 2WD.
