Adventure For Two: A Look At Kawasaki’s Teryx S LE Side-By-Side UTV
Kawasaki’s Teryx two-passenger recreation UTV returns for 2022 in the Teryx S LE. The latest model features new alloy wheels and an updated visual design for its body-color seats. As in 2021, the model comes in Candy Lime Green or Candy Persimmon Red, both paired with Super Black.
A Powerful Pull
The Teryx S LE has a number of differences from the base model. Its suspension places a greater emphasis on ride comfort. It features longer travel with 10.7 inches (272 millimeters) for the front wheels and 10 in. (254 mm) for the rear. The suspension’s independent A-arms have a revised shape for additional clearance. The vehicle’s stance is larger as well, with a longer wheelbase of 88.2 in/ (2,240 mm) and a wider tread width of 55 in. (1,397 mm).
The Teryx S LE can haul up to 600 pounds (272 kilograms) of cargo in its tilting, 27.6- by 43.3-in. (701- by 1,100-mm) bed. Kawasaki rates its towing capacity at 1,300 pounds (590 kilograms). It has a standard 2-in. (51-mm) hitch receiver.
The UTV’s rack-and-pinion-based, electric power steering is speed-sensitive: Its assistance is stronger at low speeds and less so at higher speeds in order to provide more driver feedback. The Teryx S LE’s turning radius is a mere 17.7 feet (5.4 meters).
All four wheels are damped by Fox 2.0 LSC Piggyback coilover shocks. Each shock absorber features adjustable preload and compression damping. The front wheels’ dual disc brakes have twin-piston calipers, but the back axle uses a sealed, oil-bathed, multi-disc rear brake unit instead. The vehicle’s Maxxis tires are sized 27 x 9-14 on the front wheels and 27 x 11-14 in the rear.
Kawasaki gives the Teryx S LE selectable two- and four-wheel drive and a locking front differential and shaft. The two-seater has 11.2 to 12.2 in. (284 to 310 mm) of ground clearance.
Centrifugal Clutch
The side-by-side’s four-stroke, 783-cc engine is a liquid-cooled, SOHC V-twin. Its strong low- and mid-range torque peaks at 47 pounds-foot (6.37 newton-meters) at 5,500 rpm. Kawasaki feeds the motor with digital fuel injection and two 36-mm (1.4-in.) Mikuni throttle bodies.
The UTV’s automatic transmission is a CVT with high and low ranges. It has a centrifugal clutch that maintains tension on the belt. This enhances throttle response and belt life, according to Kawasaki, and also provides engine braking on downslopes.
In the dashboard is a digital display with a full set of gauges and indicators. The storage space behind the seats has a sealed lid and offers 49 gallons (185.5 liters) of stowage room. The vehicle has four LED headlights, a pair of LED taillights, and an LED stoplight.
The Teryx S LE weighs approximately 1,596 lbs (724 kg). It has a welded, double-X reinforced, steel-tube frame. Its fuel tank holds 7.9 gal (29.9 L).
