Harley-Davidson Looks To Historic & Future Motorcycle Design With New Icons Collection Program
A new Icons Collection program that Harley-Davidson launched this week will introduce one or two new limited-edition models annually that are designed to “elevate traditional forms and celebrate Americana,” the manufacturer says. Icons Collection bikes will either revisit classic Harley-Davidson design themes or explore ideas that represent future motorcycle styles. Each model will have just one production run, and Harley-Davidson will never resume or repeat production. Individual bikes will be serialized, and owners will receive a certificate of authenticity.
The program kicks off with global production of the Electra Glide Revival, a retro-classic model inspired by Harley-Davidson’s 1969 Electra Glide. The new limited-edition bike—Harley says just 1,500 will be produced—is designed for nostalgists seeking a distinctive and timeless style. The original Electra Glide was The Motor Company’s first model to offer the Bat Wing fairing accessory, which the company says still serves as the foundational fairing design for its current touring motorcycles.
A New-Time Revival
As you can tell from the first glance, the Electra Glide Revival gives several nods to its 1969 inspirational template, including a period-inspired tank medallion and Electra Glide script on the front fender. The Revival’s Hi-Fi Blue, Black Denim, and Birch White available paint colors also honor the original’s paint scheme. The Revival incorporates a single-spar Harley-Davidson Touring frame with rigid backbone design that can support current engine power, which comes in the form of Harley’s 97-horsepower (72-kilowatt) Milwaukee-Eight 114 V-Twin power plant. The engine generates 118 foot-pounds (160 newton-meters) of torque at 3,250 rpm and is paired with a six-speed Cruise Drive transmission.
The classic Bat Wing fairing with clear windshield and split-stream vent is the face of the bike, which also sports a solo black-and-white seat, chrome steel-laced wheels, wide whitewall tires, and saddlebags. Behind the fairing, you’ll find a Boom! Box GTS infotainment system with 6.5-inch color touchscreen control, hand and voice command abilities, two 25-watt speakers, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. Onboard Reflex Defensive Rider Systems technologies include an enhanced cornering anti-lock brake system, electronic linked braking, and traction control system implementations, as well as a Drag-torque Slip Control System and Hill Hold Control technology.
