Meet The All-New 2021 Can-Am Commander UTV
Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) has completely redesigned its Can-Am Commander side-by-side for the 2021 model year. The all-new UTV is built for versatility during work or recreation, with a higher ground clearance and an upgraded suspension. It’s also quieter and more comfortable for its two or four passengers during longer rides.
“The 2021 Can-Am Commander is our most versatile side-by-side vehicle, period,” says BRP’s Director of Global Marketing for the Can-Am Off-Road and Marine Group, Julie Tourville. “It is smooth and incredibly fun to drive, yet rugged and very capable. The lineup, built from the rider down, is truly the best of off-road living—designed for an awesome rider experience regardless of use.”
Options & Accessories
The Can-Am Commander is available in DPS, MAX DPS, XT, MAX XT, and XT-P trim levels, including models with two or four bucket seats. The driver's seat is adjustable, as is the tilt steering wheel. To prevent theft, the Commander’s ignition key uses Can-Am’s Digitally Encoded Security System. A 4.5-inch (114-millimeter) and a 7.6-in. digital display provide the driver with operating information and keypad input.
The doors of the new Commander open wider than on earlier models. There’s a standard side cargo box, as well as an available half-door and sport roof. The UTV is highly configurable with more than 150 accessories, many of which use BRP’s proprietary LinQ quick-attach system and mounting points. The list includes a roof rack, modular storage boxes, a winch, the Rear Adventure Rack, a cooler, a tailgate extension, a headache rack, a waterproof storage bag, LED driving lights, and much more. The Commander’s 650-watt magneto allows for electrical upgrades such as a stereo, additional lights, snow plows, and more.
Tackle The Terrain
Powered by a 100-horsepower (74.6-kilowatt) Rotax 1000R engine, the 2021 Can-Am Commander boasts a 2,000-pound (907.2-kilogram) towing capacity. The utility vehicle also has the largest dump cargo box in its class, according to the manufacturer. The 29.5 x 45.2 x 10.6-inch (749 x 1,148 x 269-mm) cargo box is capable of hauling up to 600 lbs (272 kg). Can-Am says that the Commander has lengthy maintenance intervals and is easy for do-it-yourselfers to service.
The UTV uses a Quick Response System X CVT transmission with high ventilation airflow and the Electronic Drive Belt Protection system. Both the transmission and the engine have user-selectable drive modes, such as a setting for turf and another for fuel economy. A Visco-Lok QE auto-locking front differential assists with traction as needed.
Can-Am says that the new Commander handles better in all riding conditions. Its speed-sensitive Tri-Mode Dynamic Power Steering reduces steering effort at low speeds and optimizes the feel of the wheel at higher speeds. The UTV has a double A-arm front suspension and an Arched Torsional Trailing Arm in the rear, both with anti-sway bars. The new suspension is designed with dive-control geometry and outfitted with premium rubber bushings. Depending on the model, the Commander offers 13 to 15 in. (330 to 381 mm) of suspension travel and 27- to 30-in. (686- to 762-mm) tires.
