Honda Previews Premium CRF450RWE “Works Edition” Motocross Bike For 2021
The 2021 edition of Honda’s CRF450RWE premium “Works Edition” motocross bike is slated to debut in November in a limited edition homologated for racing. It comes with numerous improvements over the standard CRF450R model. Both bikes are built on a “Razor Sharp Cornering” design philosophy, Honda says, incorporating greater corner exit power, better handling, and more consistent lap times.
“With its emphasis on cornering performance, we’re confident that the all-new 2021 model will help Red Riders write their own names in the record books with dominant performances from gate drop to checkered flag,” says American Honda Senior Manager of Powersports Marketing Lee Edmunds.
New “Works Edition” Features
The CRF450RWE—available in red—comes with hand-ported cylinder heads with a red cover, as well as special ECU settings for performance. Its exclusive Yoshimura exhaust sports a titanium header. A Hinson clutch basket and cover comes standard on the CRF450RWE, along with a Twin Air filter and premium DID DirtStar LT-X rims. A Throttle Jockey seat cover and graphics turn heads when the motocross bike is resting between races.
Honda also revalved the CRF450RWE’s suspension. The shock shaft and lower fork legs of its 49-millimeter inverted Showa fork are covered in titanium nitride. The elite motorcycle also comes with black triple clamps and an RK Gold #520 13T/49T final drive chain.
The CRF450RWE also shares many new features with the standard 2021 CRF450 model, including more low- to midrange power and a new, lighter chassis with 20% reduced lateral rigidity for stability in cornering. Both bikes are narrower across the main spars and feature a new seat and bodywork. Out back, a new swingarm improves rear tire grip. A major change is a new hydraulic clutch in place of the previous cable-activated one. The new Nissin eight-plate clutch is also stronger and more slip-resistant, yet has a 10% lighter lever pull.
Vital Stats
Honda powers the CRF450RWE with a 449-cubic centimeter, four-stroke, one-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine with a high-compression (13.5:1), four-valve Unicam cylinder head. The 38-mm intake valves are made of titanium; the 31-mm exhaust valves, of steel. The fuel-injected throttle body is a 46-mm downdraft unit. The Unicam engine is mated to a close-ratio, five-speed transmission and fed by a 1.7-gallon (6.4-liter) fuel tank.
The 244-pound (110.7-kilogram) racing bike has a 58.3-inch (1,481-mm) wheelbase, a 38-inch (965-mm) seat height, and 13.2 inches (335 mm) of ground clearance. Its big, single-disc brakes measure 9.45 in (240 mm) in the rear and 10.2 in (260 mm) up front, with the latter regulated by a twin-piston caliper. The uber-Honda’s front fork provides 12.2 inches (310 mm) of travel and has adjustable rebound and compression damping; its Showa Pro-link rear shock has 12.4 inches (315 mm) of travel and adds spring preload adjustability to the formula. The CRF450RWE’s Dunlop MX33 tires measure 80/100-21 to the fore and 120/80-19 aft.
