Honda’s 2020 Model Year CRF450X Dirt Bike Ups The Off-Road Ante
In early May, Honda Powersports detailed its 2020 dirt bike lineup, which numbers eight CRF Performance models and four CRF Trail bikes for pro-level racers, first-time riders, and other off-roaders. In addition to the flagship CRF450R ($9,399; now available), the lineup includes the CRF450X ($9,799; September availability), an off-road model that’s legal in 50 states and that has earned 20-plus Baja 1000 series wins.
From The Desert To The Woods
Available in red trim, Honda spruced up the CRF450X’s appearance with new graphics for 2020, but, overall, the bike carries over much in the way of hardware from the 2019 version, which Honda changed up “in a big way.” The 2020 model includes such off-road worthy features as an 18-inch (45.7-centimeter) Dunlap MX52 110/100-18 rear wheel, side-stand, headlight, and sealed chain. These and other features make the bike ideal for riding in “desert expanses or tight woods,” Honda notes.
At a ready-to-ride 275 pounds (124.7 kilograms), the 2020 CRF450X includes dual radiators with a refined core area that Honda says provides superior heat dissipation compared to conventional dual-radiator designs. There’s also a 2.01-gallon (7.6-liter) titanium fuel tank, an electric starter, and a lithium-ion battery that Honda says is light, compact, and offers “excellent performance.” Elsewhere, the 449cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke Unicam engine combines what Honda says are the best of single- and double-overhead cam designs. Honda’s design approach results in a compact engine that reduces overall bike weight while delivering a high, 12.0:1 compression ratio.
“A Gear For Everything”
Also notable is the CRF450X’s wide-ratio six-speed transmission, which gives riders more options and greater versatility than typical five-speed MX models, Honda notes. “You have a gear for everything from East Coast rock crawling to wide-open Baja blasts,” Honda says. The bike also provides a 49-millimeter leading-axle inverted telescopic Showa coil-spring fork front suspension and a Pro-Link Showa single-shock rear suspension with adjustable spring load, rebound, and compression-damping abilities, not to mention a twin-spar aluminum chassis, a 37.4-inch (95-centimeter) front seat height, and 12.7 inches (32.2 centimeters) of ground clearance.
