Yamaha’s MOTOROiD Concept Cleaning Up At 2018 Red Dot Awards
Yamaha Motor has announced that its MOTOROiD concept motorcycle was one of 40 concepts to receive the Best of the Best designation in the Red Dot Award: Design Concept 2018 category. The MOTOROiD also received a nomination for the Red Dot: Luminary award, marking the first time that Yamaha has been nominated for this prestigious top-three award. The Red Dot Awards, which looked at more than 5,600 entries from designers in 55 countries, will announce winners for the year at an awards ceremony on Sept. 28.
Yamaha MOTOROiD
Yamaha designed the MOTOROiD concept to be an extension of the rider, and it achieves that by being able to recognize the owner, react to his or her actions via a human-machine interface (HMI), and even move autonomously. The bike can automatically shift its center of gravity using a combination of artificial intelligence and other technologies, which allows it to stand up from its kickstand and move to meet its owner. Yamaha first showed off the MOTOROiD and all of its unique features at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show.
Scars From The Journey
The MOTOROiD’s exterior design is dramatically unlike most concept vehicle designs in one important way: rather than looking polished and new, Yamaha purposely left in cut marks, scars on various parts of the body, and worn-out tires to show the process designers went through to create it. Now, that decision is being rewarded with multiple award nominations.
The Red Dot Deign Awards are held by Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Germany, and the awards are highly sought after by designers around the world. Categories include Design Concept, Product Design, and Communication Design.
