All-New, All-Electric Polaris RANGER XP Kinetic UTV Ups The Performance Ante
If you claim to have the “hardest-working, smoothest-riding UTV ever built,” you better have the goods to back it up. Polaris seems to have just that with its all-new RANGER XP Kinetic off-road side-by-side. The all-electric UTV will be available this summer as a three-seat model in Premium and Ultimate trim levels and featuring an all-new electric powertrain developed with Zero Motorcycles. Polaris says it provides the most horsepower ever for a utility side-by-side at 110 horsepower (82 kilowatts); it also leads the industry in torque, at 140 pounds-foot (190 newton-meters).
“Electrifying an already class-leading product is a very complicated undertaking, but with Polaris, we had the advantage of starting with both the best UTV in the industry and a very talented and collaborative team,” says Zero Motorcycles CEO Sam Paschel.
Quietly Powerful
The XP Kinetic’s electric powertrain has the muscle to tow up to 2,500 pounds (1,134 kilograms) and haul an industry-best 1,250 lbs. (567 kg). Electric operation means no oil changes, filter replacements, spark plugs, or clutch maintenance, adding up to 70% lower maintenance costs compared to similar gas-powered models, Polaris says. Electric also means quieter operation, so owners can start working earlier without disturbing neighbors or spooking farm animals, and can get to their favorite hunting spots without disturbing prey. A 12-volt cargo box outlet is included to power various accessories and charge portable batteries.
The Premium trim provides 14.9 kilowatt-hours of lithium-ion battery capacity for a roughly 45-mile (72-kilometer) range. The Ultimate trim bumps battery capacity up to 29.8 kWh, for up to 80 miles (129 km). Charging can be as easy as plugging the included Level 1/Level 2 EV charging cord into a standard 120-volt or 240V wall outlet. The UTV includes a new shifter design with high, low, neutral, and park settings, and the new reverse switch lets you back up at the flip of a switch. Additionally, Eco+, Standard, and Sport drive modes are available for maximum range, everyday driving, and demanding driving conditions, respectively.
Built To The Extreme
The Ultimate trim adds a 7-inch infotainment screen with built in Ride Command technology and dash-mounted speakers. Ride Command provides real-time battery charge status and estimated remaining range and lets the driver drop a waypoint on a charging location for precise distance tracking. A new suite of connected technologies lets owners remotely monitor detailed vehicle location and status information on their mobile phones.
Polaris says it torture-tested the UTV in extreme conditions and treacherous terrain; the manufacturer sells the XP Kinetic with a full-coverage front bumper and full-body skid plate for protection. The UTV’s suspension has 10 in. (25.4 centimeters) of travel and a class-leading 14 in. (35.6 cm) of ground clearance. The vehicle’s 29-in. eight-ply Pro Armor X-Terrain tires provide added traction and durability. Customization opportunities include a fast-acting electric heater kit, an upgraded 3kW onboard charger for maximum fast charging, and other accessories designed for the Kinetic XP, which is also compatible with 95% of accessories available for the RANGER XP 1000.
