Read More (About The Polaris RANGER)The Polaris RANGER side-by-side UTV has become a frequent sight on ranches, farms, acreages, and hunting sites. With room for two to six passengers, the RANGER was made to haul and tow moderate loads over rough terrain. Over the years, the UTV has been powered by gasoline and diesel fuel; more recently Polaris began offering a RANGER that runs on battery power.
A recent lineup for the traditional, internal-combustion RANGER starts off with two-seat models such as the RANGER 500. Based on a 500-cc engine, the 32-horsepower (24-kilowatt) RANGER 500 has a 58-inch (1,473-millimeter) width, 10 in. (254 mm) of ground clearance, and On-Demand all-wheel drive/two-wheel drive. The 500 can tow 1,500 pounds (680 kilograms) and 500 lbs (227 kg) in its cargo box. The RANGER SP 570—also available in a four-seat CREW version—is a narrower 56-in. (1,422-mm)-wide machine that’s also more powerful at 44 HP (33 kW). Its 500-lb dump box is gas-assisted. On the smaller side, the RANGER 150 EFI for young riders has a scaled-down 150-cc engine and frame. The 2WD youth model comes with a PIN-protected ignition, two helmets with a Bluetooth detection system, and a phone app parents can use to track the UTV’s location and speed, limit its top travel speed, and enable a geo-fence to keep the machine from driving off the property.
Next up are three-seat RANGER/six-seat RANGER CREW models. The RANGER 570 Full-Size is a somewhat wider (60-in.; 1,524-mm) edition of the SP 570 with similar specifications. The vaunted RANGER 1000 ups the ante with a 999-cc engine rated at 61 HP (45.5 kW). It has a 12-in. (305-mm) ground clearance, a 2,500-lb (1,134-kg) towing capacity, and a 1,000-lb (454-kg) box capacity in its three-seat version or 1,750 lbs (794 kg) of payload capacity in its CREW edition. The RANGER XP 1000 wrings more power from its engine at 82 HP (61 kW) and has a taller 13-in. (330-mm) clearance. A recent example boasts 27-in. (686-mm), eight-ply Pro Armor X-Terrain tires and a three-mode throttle control with selectable standard, work, and performance settings.
Polaris is no stranger to the electrification trend. Its RANGER XP Kinetic is a three-seater with an all-electric powertrain and a very high, 14-in. (356-mm) ground clearance. Its 110-HP (82-kW) AC motor brings 140 pounds-foot (190 newton-meters) of torque into play at any speed to tow up to 2,500 lbs and haul up to 1,250 lbs (567 kg). Its lithium-Ion battery provides a 45- or 80-mile (72- or 129-kilometer) range depending on trim level. Its onboard charger for 120- or 240-volt sources can fully recharge the Kinetic in as little as five hours. The UTV’s Ride Command+ feature offers a phone app with location, troubleshooting, and other telematics functions. The Kinetic’s Ultimate trim level has a Ride Command 7-inch infotainment screen that provides GPS, waypoints, and battery charge status information.
Polaris also offers the RANGER EV, a two-seat, electric model with lead-acid batteries. The 30-HP (22-kW) machine can tow up to 1,500 lbs and has a payload capacity of 1,000 lbs. The low-maintenance RANGER EV’s quiet operation is popular with hunters.
Polaris offers several special editions of the RANGER, some of which are optimized for particular usage types. Common components include arched A-arms for greater ground clearance; special tires, bumpers, and wheels; and a winch.
RANGER NorthStar Editions come with a Pro Shield enclosed cab, heating and ventilation, a glass windshield and rear panel, wipers/washers, and more.
The Waterfowl and High Lifter Editions are made to handle mud with durable drivelines, high-mounted air intakes, fast automatic all-wheel drive, and protected electrical systems. The High Lifter has water drains in its half doors.
The RANGER Trail Boss and Big Game Editions are designed to tackle steep trails. A self-leveling rear suspension maintains ride height under load, while Active Descent Control (ADC) provides better control on descending slopes.
The RANGER’s Premium and Ultimate trim levels come with a variety of upgrades depending on model. Among these are electronic power steering (EPS), a full-body skid plate, an adjustable seat slider, premium paint, bumper options, different tires and wheels, and the six-position Polaris Pulse Electrical System. A Winter Prep Package includes a full cab, heat and defrost, special seals, and more.
The Helmet Aware Technology on the RANGER 150 EFI and other youth models from Polaris comes with child-sized helmets and an attachable Bluetooth beacon. Parents can use the Youth Ride Control App to set the UTV’s behavior when no helmet is detected nearby. The RANGER may display a warning to the rider, engage a speed limit, or even refuse to start without a helmet present.
The RANGER UTV got its start when Polaris co-founder Edgar Hetteen wanted his wife to be able ride next to him. The first side-by-side RANGER debuted in 1999 as a 6x6, ride-in, off-road vehicle with a steering wheel. The initial model could reach speeds in excess of 25 mph (40 km/h).
Polaris improved upon the RANGER’s power and rider comfort in the following years. Electronic fuel injection became a standard feature in 2005 as Lock & Ride accessories hit the market. The Dual A-arm suspension appeared in the rear in 2005 and the front in 2009.
The RANGER XP 900 brought 20% more power in 2013, as well as ergonomic improvements. Its ride quality was enhanced by a progressive suspension with up to 10 in. (254 mm) of travel. Five years later, Polaris introduced the even more powerful RANGER XP 1000 with 13 in. of ground clearance and 2,500 lbs of towing ability. The new Pro Shield cab provided much better dust sealing than others on the market. The six-passenger RANGER CREW XP 1000 launched in 2019.
The year 2020’s all-new RANGER 1000 and its CREW variant supplanted the XP 900. The following year, the RANGER 1000 and XP 1000 received a 30% stronger front drive, 50% more durable clutch components, and a service interval three times as long.
