Suzuki’s History

Suzuki was founded in 1909 as Suzuki Loom Works by 21-year-old Michio Suzuki. Two years after launching the company’s first weaving machines, Suzuki invented a revolutionary version of the machine that simplified the production of textiles with checkered patterns. In 1937, Suzuki followed his passion and shifted gears, almost literally, to begin manufacturing automobiles.

With the dawning of World War II, Suzuki was forced back into loom production. By 1952, however, engines were once again being manufactured in the company’s facility in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, Japan. 

Advent Of The Suzuki Motorcycle

The first model that went into production was the Power Free motorized bicycle, followed by the more powerful Diamond Free, which had a 60cc, 2-horsepower motor. In 1954, as Suzuki was churning out 6,000 motorcycles per month, the company changed its name to the Suzuki Motor Company. In 1955, Suzuki produced its first automobile, the Suzulight, which was quite advanced for its time.
