It was 1999 when Suzuki turned its midsize SV650 street bike loose on the motorcycle world. Since then, many first-time owners have honed their riding chops on SV650s. Renewed for the 2024 model year, the reliable, versatile SV650 ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) continues to be an excellent choice for new owners and experienced riders alike, thanks to its great looks and 90-degree liquid-cooled 645-cc V-twin engine, which provides plenty of torque-rich power.

Features New Riders Will Like

New riders will appreciate the SV650 ABS’s Easy Start System, which simplifies starting the bike without pulling the clutch lever when in neutral. They’ll also like the Low RPM Assist feature, part of the advanced electronic fuel-injected system that helps enable smooth takeoffs and reduces the odds of annoying stalls.

Riders at all experience levels will appreciate Suzuki’s compact ABS system, which matches the hydraulic brake force to available traction. Braking performance also receives contributions from the braking system’s 4-piston Tokico calipers grasping 290-millimeter fully floating stainless steel rotors at the front.

A Tasteful Aesthetic

Suzuki describes the SV650 ABS’ looks as classy yet understated. That’s apt, as there’s nothing too flashy about the tasteful, business-like appearance of the Glass Sparkle Black paint scheme. That said, the dark-gold trellis steel frame and matching cast-aluminum wheels add a touch of appreciated flair.

There’s also a bit of old-school refinement thanks to the round, multi-reflector headlight and a slightly futuristic feel due to the sweeping rider seat and sharp angles of the fuel tank.

A Lightweight Design

Suzuki constructs the trellis frame of high-strength steel tubes, which provide durability but also assist in keeping the bike at a low 437-pound (198-kilogram) curb weight. The light weight combined with what Suzuki says is the lowest seat height (30.9 inches; 785 mm) in the 600- to 800-cc class and the narrow fuel tank (3.8-gallon; 14.4-liter capacity) pitch in for agile handling whether maneuvering through busy urban streets, twisting mountain stretches, or bumpy country roads.
