Honda Improves Riding Experience For 2022 Africa Twin Adventure-Touring Motorcycle

Honda recently announced that it is bringing back its Africa Twin adventure-touring motorcycle for 2022 in four trims. The standard Africa Twin and Africa Twin DCT trims aim to provide sporting and off-road performance, and now come with the same rear carrier as the Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES trim. That trim and the Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES DCT trim are designed for distance riding, and now include a shorter windscreen for improved visibility. The two Africa Twin DCT trims notably include Honda’s automatic six-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) rather than a the six-speed manual transmission found in the non-DCT trims. Honda says the DCT provides a number of benefits, not least of which is smoother shifting in the lower gears.

    Choose Your Africa Twin

Honda introduced the Africa Twin platform in 2016. For 2022, all four model trims feature Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, as well as an easier-to-read 6.5-inch touchscreen dash display with three selectable display modes that provide varying levels of information granularity. All four trims also feature a 1,084-cc four-stroke parallel-twin Unicam liquid-cooled engine, cruise control, and anti-lock braking system (ABS) with on- and off-road modes. Riders can also expect a fully adjustable inverted Showa fork with 45-millimeter tubes and 9 inches (22.9 centimeters) of travel, which Honda says tops the 1,000-cc off-road class.

All Africa Twin trims have a 62-in. (157.5-cm) wheelbase, and 34.3-in. (87.1-cm) standard and 33.5-in. (85.1-cm) low position seat heights. Curb weights range from 505 to 551 pounds (229 to 250 kilograms), and fuel tank capacity is 5 gallons (18.8 liters) for the standard trims and 6.3 gal (24 L) for the Adventure Sports ES trims. The standard trims come in a new Grand Prix Red color option, while the Adventure Sports SE trims come in Pearl White. The Adventure Sports SE versions also feature a Showa EERA electronic suspension, heated grips, tubeless tires, and an aluminum rear carrier.

    Inside DCT

Honda says its DCT provides uninterrupted power to the rear wheel, meaning momentary traction losses between shifts are avoided. DCT is also constructed with steel gears, meaning no drive belts slipping, breaking, or burning up. The transmission offers a Manual Mode, controlled by a pair of handlebar-mounted fingertip shifters, that lets riders override automatic shifting. Riders can also adjust the bike’s rider character by selecting pre-programmed Drive, Sport, and Manual drive modes, and can engage a G-Switch during off-road rides to slide the rear tire under throttle input and help steer with the rear, Honda notes.
