The BMW R 1300 GS adventure motorcycle is back for 2024 with important design changes, a 26-pound (11.8-kilogram) weight reduction, and numerous tantalizing standard and optional features. An undeniable highlight of the touring enduro bike is its revised, more compact 2-cylinder engine, which BMW says is by far the most powerful boxer power plant it has produced in the series.

“With a noticeable increase in power and torque combined with significantly reduced weight and a very compact design, the newly designed boxer engine is the perfect drivetrain for the new R 1300 GS and a genuine milestone in the 100-year history of BMW Motorrad,” says Christof Lischka, BMW Motorrad head of development.

    Lean, Focused Design

    The 1,300-cc, air and liquid-cooled engine generates 145 horsepower (107 kilowatts) at 7,750 rpm and 110 pounds-foot (149 newton-meters) of torque at 6,500 rpm compared to a previous 136 HP (100 kW) and 105 lbs.-ft. (142 N-m) of torque at 6,250 rpm. The 4-stroke engine’s maximum engine speed is 9,000 rpm.

The power plant is 8.6 lbs (3.9 kg) lighter than its predecessor, while the entire powertrain is 14.3 lbs (6.5 kg) lighter. BMW credits the savings to integrating the 6-speed gearbox and clutch into the engine housing and incorporating a new camshaft arrangement. The manufacturer reports that fuel consumption remains nearly identical despite the increased performance.

    What’s In Store For 2024

Changes for 2024 also include everything from a new matrix LED headlamp to a new driveshaft and rear axle assembly to a completely redesigned frame. The latter features a stiffer steel sheet metal shell main frame and a new die-cast aluminum rear section. Riders can also look forward to more precise steering and improved ride stability thanks to the new EVO Telelever front suspension with flex element and the revised EVO Paralever rear suspension.

The R 1300 GS now offers four riding modes instead of three, including Enduro (for off-road rides), Rain, Road, and Eco. A Riding Modes Pro option adds Dynamic, Dynamic Pro, and Enduro Pro modes to the mix. The latter two include additional individualization capabilities. Also worth considering are options for electronic dynamic suspension adjustment, adaptive height vehicle control and sports suspension, a Comfort rider seat, and heated rider and passenger seating.
