Honda Gives Talon 1000 Sport UTV Series Myriad Upgrades For 2022
Honda has enhanced its 999-cc Talon sport UTV family with driving, comfort, style, and convenience upgrades. Depending on the model, available colors for 2022 include Matte Abyss Black, Pearl Red, Matte Blue Metallic, Pearl Orange, and Tonic Yellow Pearl.
The side-by-side, two-seat Talon 1000R and Talon 1000X as well as the four-seat Talon 1000X-4 are each available in standard models as well as versions with the FOX Live Valve self-adjusting suspension developed with Fox and Bosch. FOX Live Valve automatically tweaks each Fox Podium shock absorber’s damping level on the fly to attenuate the vehicle’s bottoming, lateral roll, and longitudinal pitch motions according to user-selected Normal or Sport settings. Talons with the standard suspension offer three manual damping settings through the Quick Switch 3 system.
“We’re pleased to bring important updates to the Talon 1000 family for 2022,” says American Honda’s Manager of Sports and Experiential, Brandon Wilson. “Produced in the USA, the Talon is the industry’s only sport side-by-side platform to offer technology like an automatic Dual Clutch Transmission and i-4WD, and it’s also proving itself in competition, with class wins in the most recent editions of the Baja 1000, King of the Hammers, and Mint 400. With Honda’s renowned durability, quality, and reliability, plus significant upgrades to improve the driving experience, the Talon is better than ever.”
New For 2022
All Talon models for 2022 are getting styling updates such as a new front fascia and bumper, just for starters. Honda says the meter is also more visible in a new location with a sun visor. The steering wheel’s paddle shifters have been elongated for easier manual gear changes as the driver makes quick turns. The floor around each seat now has rubber sealing to protect against mud and water. New ignition timing smooths out the Talons’ transition from deceleration to acceleration. Launch control now comes standard on all models, and their i-4WD system has a more aggressive torque transfer for quicker reaction times and higher performance with bigger, aftermarket tires. Finally, there’s a new, pre-wired switch panel in the meter’s old location to make it easier to upgrade the Talon with electronic accessories down the road.
Model Specs
The Talon family shares a liquid-cooled, four-stroke, OHC, parallel-twin Unicam engine with four valves per cylinder. The fuel-injected motor has an electric starter and is mated to the six-speed, automatic Dual Clutch Transmission. Each Talon has a double wishbone front suspension with a multi-link trailing arm in the back. Honda’s Electronic Brakeforce Distribution system modulates the hydraulic brake system with dual 250-millimeter (9.8-inch) discs front and rear. All 2022 Talons have Maxxis tires with 28x9x15s in front and 28x11x15s behind.
The Talon 1000R has a long-travel suspension (17.7 in./450 mm in front and 20.1 in./511 mm in the rear), a 68.4-in. (1,737-mm) overall width, and a 92.7-in. (2,355-mm) wheelbase. It’s intended for wide-open, rough terrain. The FOX Live Valve edition of the 1000R and the other two Talon models have LED headlamps.
Honda’s Talon 1000X is tailored more toward narrow trails with lots of twists and turns. It’s narrower at just 64 in. (1,626 mm) wide and has a shorter wheelbase of 87.6 in. (2,225 mm), with front and rear wheel-travel figures of 14.6 and 15.1 in (371 and 384 mm), respectively. Like the 1000R, the Talon 1000X has a 7.3-gallon (27.6-liter) fuel capacity. The standard, two-seat 1000X has the lightest curb weight of the group at 1,499 pounds (680 kilograms).
The Talon 1000X-4 is a four-seat edition of the narrow Talon 1000X with similar specs but a longer, 116.4-in. (2,957-mm) wheelbase. For 2022, the 1000X-4 has a new storage space under the driver’s seat and a larger, 7.7-gal (29.1-L) fuel tank. Its FOX Live Valve version is the heavyweight of the product line at 1,753 lbs (795 kg).
