Indian Motorcycle Introduces New Challenger Series, Hopes To Redefine American Bagger
“Fully loaded” is how Indian Motorcycle summarizes its new Challenger series. “The Indian Challenger delivers a new level of performance for riders who understand that the seemingly small details make a huge difference,” explains Reid Wilson, vice president of Indian Motorcycle. “Our mindset was to leave no stone unturned and deliver a bagger that exceeds the standards in categories like power, handling, comfort, and technology.”
All About The Engine
The Challenger is built around Indian’s all-new PowerPlus engine, a liquid-cooled, 60-degree V-twin with 122 horsepower (91 kilowatts) and 128 pounds-foot (173 newton meters) of torque. Indian equips the Challenger series with a powertrain featuring a six-speed transmission (with overdrive), an assist clutch, and hydraulic valve lash adjusters and camshaft chain tensioners. To make it easier for riders to customize throttle performance, there are three ride modes (Rain, Standard, and Sport) engineered with distinct traction control settings that align with each mode’s specific throttle mapping.
Next-Level Technology
Premium touring amenities are plentiful on the Challenger series, which starts at $21,999. Riders, for example, benefit from electronic cruise control, full LED lighting, ABS (anti-lock braking system), and keyless ignition. Indian installs radially-mounted Brembo brakes and touring Metzeler Cruisetec tires for superior stopping and traction. The chassis-mounted fairing features an adjustable windscreen with nearly 3 inches of travel and adjustable air vents to protect riders from the elements. The Dark Horse (starting at $27,499) and Limited (starting at $27,999) Challenger models also come with Indian’s Smart Lean Technology for improved corning and dynamic traction control, as well as the Ride Command infotainment system that includes a 7-inch display with weather and traffic overlays.
