Back To Its Roots: Can-Am Revives The Electric Motorcycle
Founded in 1971, Can-Am began designing enduro motorcycles before officially going into production in 1973 and hitting motocross tracks everywhere. After a decade of manufacturing championship-winning motocross and endurance motorcycles, Can-Am parent company Bombardier slowed production of Can-Am motorcycles before halting production entirely in 1987.
After a 19-year hiatus, Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) revived the brand in 2006 but changed the focus from motorcycles to ATVs built for a variety of rider types. Since then, the company has expanded into other categories, including side-by-sides with model families such as the Commander series. With a half-century under its belt—the brand celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023—Can-Am continues to gain momentum by offering unforgettable experiences and innovative products.
There has also been a revival of the motorcycle line, as Can-Am returns to its roots with industry-leading electric motorcycles, including new models like the Origin. The 2025 Can-Am Origin is an all-electric dual-sport motorcycle designed to take you through dirt, over asphalt, and beyond with a 47-horsepower (35-kilowatt) engine, a 90-mile (145-kilometer) range, a full KYB suspension, a 50-minute charging time using a Level 2 charger, and 4.3-second acceleration from 0 to 60 mph.
Bombardier & BRP
Joseph Bombardier founded his company in 1942 as L’Auto-Neige Bombardier Limitée, beginning with the first-ever vehicle that could travel on snow. But over the years, Bombardier expanded and even invented a new sport with the invention of the Ski-Doo in 1959.
Fast-forward 60-plus years, Bombardier Inc. was a world leader in business jets, trains, and more. The company sold its Bombardier Recreational Products division in 2003. Today, BRP owns a number of brands in addition to Can-Am, including Lynx snowmobiles, Sea-Doo watercraft, Evinrude outboard engines, AlumaCraft, Manitou, and Quintrex. It also manufactures Rotax engines, which power most of the Can-Am vehicles you’ll find on the market today.
Can-Am ATVs & UTVs
Can-Am’s current ATV lineup consists of the Outlander, Renegade, and Youth models; its side-by-side lineup includes the Defender, Commander, Maverick R, Maverick X3, Maverick Sport, and Maverick Trail. The product lines include variants for a wide variety of uses. The standard Defender, for example, is a 2-seater with either a Rotax 52-HP (39-kW) HD7 or 65-HP (48-kW) HD9 engine. The Defender Max Limited comes with an 82-HP (61-kW) Rotax HD10 V-twin engine.
Can-Am also offers features like a speed limiter, an industry-leading 4.5- by 6-foot (1.37- by 1.8-meter) cargo box with a hydraulic power tilt bed, a waterproof sound system with six 7.7-inch speakers with Bluetooth compatibility, an HVAC climate control system featuring an automatic and a variable compressor mode that improves efficiency, under-bed storage with removable side panels, and more.
Can-Am Spyder & Ryker Three-Wheelers
Can-Am launched its Spyder line of trike motorcycles in 2007, initially giving the first-ever production model to former “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno. Since 2009, the company has released the Spyder RT, the Spyder ST in 2012, the Spyder F3 and F3-S in 2014, and the Spyder F3-T and F3 Limited in 2015—the same year Can-Am produced its 100,000th Spyder.
Since 2018, Can-Am has released the Ryker and Ryker Rally Edition. The Ryker is an on-road 3-wheel vehicle with innovative ergonomic features like adjustable handlebars, brake pedal, and foot pegs. The 2025 Ryker offers a 2-cylinder, 50-HP (37-kW) Rotax 600 ACE or an 82-HP 3-cylinder 900 ACE cc engine. The 2025 Ryker Rally also equips the 82-HP 3-cylinder Rotax 900 ACE engine, as well as Ryker Rally tires and a KYB suspension that serves it well on unpaved gravel roads and trails.
