All Terrain: A Brief History Of Can-Am
Although known for its all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and utility vehicles (UTVs), Can-Am originally started out working on motocross and enduro motorcycle designs in 1971 before officially entering production in 1973. Only a decade later, Bombardier, Can-Am’s parent company, slowed down production of Can-Am motorcycles before ending it entirely in 1987. Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) revived the brand in 2006 with a focus on manufacturing ATVs, but the company has expanded into other categories since then. For example, Can-Am introduced the Commander series of side-by-sides (SSVs) in 2010, complete with an 85-horsepower Rotax 1000 V-Twin engine.
Bombardier & BRP
Bombardier was founded in 1942, and while it used to own Bombardier Recreational Products, it sold the division in 2003. In addition to Can-Am, BRP also owns a number of other brands and product lines, including Ski-Doo and Lynx snowmobiles, Sea-Doo watercraft, and Evinrude outboard engines. It also produces Rotax engines, which are available on most of the Can-Am vehicles you’ll find on the market today.
Can-Am ATVs & SSVs
Can-Am’s current ATV lineup consists of the Outlander, Renegade, and Youth models, and its side-by-side lineup includes the Commander, Defender, Maverick Sport, Maverick Trail, and Maverick X3. The company’s vehicles are highly customizable with many different packages available. For example, the standard Commander is a two-seater that comes with a 71-horsepower Rotax 800R engine, and the Commander Max Limited is a four-seater with a 92-horsepower Rotax 1000R engine. Can-Am also offers a range of accessories for its vehicles, including storage units, racks, hitches, covers, and more.
Can-Am Spyder & Ryker Three-Wheelers
Can-Am launched its Spyder line of trike motorcycles in 2007 and delivered the first ever production model to Jay Leno. The company went on to release the Spyder RT in 2009, the Spyder ST in 2012, the Spyder F3 and F3-S in 2014, and the Spyder F3-T and F3 Limited in 2015. In that same year, Can-Am produced its 100,000th Spyder.
This year, Can-Am introduced the Ryker and Ryker Rally Edition. The Ryker is an on-road three-wheeler that has the option of either a 47-horspower Rotax 600 ACE two-cylinder engine or a 77-horsepower 900 ACE 3-cyilinder engine. The Rally Edition comes standard with the Rotax 900 ACE engine but includes additional features such as rally tires and a KYB suspension that make it better suited for running on unpaved gravel roads and trails.
