About Other Utility Vehicles
The Other category of off-road utility vehicles (UTVs) lists unusual models with key differences from more common examples of the genre. Instead of four wheels, an “other” UTV might have three wheels like the Westward Industries GO4 or as many as eight wheels like the Argo Conquest. It might even have rubber tracks like the RangeRunner by TerraTrack.
Instead of a steering wheel, a niche UTV might offer twin-lever skid steering. Search and rescue-oriented models like the Argo Aurora Responder may have fold-down seats that can provide a platform for an injured person on a stretcher. Some UTVs can even ford a few feet of water or operate entirely amphibiously like the Gibbs Terraquad.

Beyond The Norm
UTVs are also known as “side-by-sides” (SxS), as they are wide enough to seat two passengers next to each other. Some manufacturers use the terms XTVs (eXtreme utility vehicles) or remote access vehicles (RAVs) to describe their products. Various models are powered by gasoline, diesel fuel, and more recently, electric batteries.
In this category for uncommon models, UTVs may be large enough to seat up to eight adults. The seats have backs and do not require the rider(s) to straddle the seat, as opposed to an ATV. Many UTVs have a cabin, a canopy, or a roll bar or roll cage. Most can tow moderate loads over rough terrain or haul them in a modest-sized cargo bed.
Argo Pushes The UTV Envelope
Argo manufactures a number of traditional ATVs and UTVs, along with six- and eight-wheeled models that can float on water and cross lakes and streams. Argo’s box-like Centaur XT is a very large, amphibious UTV with giant mud tires and a full cab with a roll-over protection system (ROPS). It can seat up to eight with optional side-facing rear seats. The driver uses two levers to hydraulically maneuver the vehicle like a skid steer.
The Centaur XT has a 55-horsepower (41-kilowatt), 1.8-liter, Doosan three-cylinder diesel engine. The boxy UTV can reach speeds of up to 25 mph (40 km/h) on land and 4 mph (6 km/h) in water. It can tow loads of up to 5,180 pounds (2,350 kilograms).
The Centaur XT’s ultra-low-pressure, 71-inch (1,800-millimeter) tires are self-inflating to provide additional traction on ice, snow, sand, mud, and other slick surfaces. The UTV even has additional diesel fuel canisters mounted in the center of each wheel, which provide weight when full for even more traction.
Argo also sells unmanned Integrator models with no cab or seats except a flat top that can carry a stretcher. The lithium-ion battery-powered R8 Integrator also features helicopter lift points on all four corners.
