BMW is updating its beloved R nineT with two new models: the 2024 R 12 nineT classic roadster and R 12 cruiser. Each gorgeous new bike is available in three colors, including the ruggedly handsome standard Blackstorm Metallic.

Each model has a BMW air- and oil-cooled boxer engine and offers several customization options. Packed with advanced tech enhancements, both bikes boast a timeless Classic trellis frame and a bold left-side twin-pipe exhaust system.

A Lighter, More Classic Design

BMW says it aimed for a “reduction to the essentials” and attention to detail in designing the bikes, and it shows. For example, BMW used a one-piece bridge steel frame with a bolt-on rear section. This allowed for fewer fastenings and a reduced curb weight.

BMW also installed a new airbox under the seat of each bike rather than mounting it below the fuel tank. With the repositioned airbox, new frame, and angled rear shock, there’s room for more customization options with interchangeable tank shapes.

BMW Boxer Engine

Each bike has a 1,170-cc 2-cylinder boxer engine based on the power plant BMW introduced in 2007 with its HP 2 Sport model.

The BMW R 12 nineT’s engine produces 109 horsepower (80 kilowatts) at 7,000 rpm and 85 pounds-foot (115 newton-meters) of torque at 6,500 rpm.

The BMW R 12’s engine generates 95 HP (70 kW) at 6,500 rpm and 81 lbf-ft (110 N-m) of torque at 6,000 rpm.

Both bikes have a 6-speed shaft drive transmission, but there’s an option to add Shift Assistant Pro for clutchless shifting. Onboard Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) enhances safety while accelerating. Engine Drag Torque Control prevents rear wheel slippage.

Riding Modes Explained

Drivers will find different riding modes to match riding conditions and their preferences.

BMW R 12 nineT riding modes:

• Rain - for restrained throttle response
• Road - optimized for everyday riding
• Dynamic - enables tapping into the full power of the engine

BMW R 12 riding modes:

• Roll - adjusts the throttle response, DTC, and Engine Drag Torque Control performance for all road types
• Rock - enables more dynamic performance

No Need For A Key

Thanks to BMW’s Keyless Ride system, riders can start the R 12 without removing the key from their pocket. (You still need a key to unlock the fuel tank cap and engage the steering lock.)

Riders can also add a Connected Ride Control option, mount a smartphone, and use the BMW Connect app via Bluetooth. The app shows vehicle data, weather information, navigation info, and more.

Updated Gauges

The bikes’ round, retro-looking analog gauges make reading information easier. Both models have a speedometer with control lights and a digital display. The R 12 nineT also has a tachometer.

The R 12’s speedometer shows the current gear and riding mode. The R 12 nineT’s also functions as a menu scroll. On both models, a higher-resolution 3.5-inch display is available as an option in lieu of the round gauges.
