Newer riders in search of a motorcycle that can both adeptly traverse bustling city streets and take on somewhat more demanding off-road trails should consider putting Honda’s all-new XR150L dual-sport bike on their shortlist. The XR150L is powered by an air-cooled, single-cylinder, four-stroke, 149-cc engine that Honda says can hit highway speeds and is tuned to take on urban and off-road environments. Available in black or white, the bike takes its styling cues from the XR650L (described by Honda as a “legend in the dual-sport world”), mimicking that bike’s black seat, exhaust, handlebar, controls, frame, and graphics.
A Good Fit For First-Timers
The XR150L provides veteran riders an affordable option for adding another bike to their collection but brings several features to the table that should be particularly appealing to beginners. In addition to an electric starter, the XR150L’s 282-pound (128-kilogram) curb weight and low 32.8-inch (833-millimeter)-high seat make for easier handling and surefooted starts and stops. Both beginners and veterans will appreciate the XR150L’s class-leading 2.8-gallon (10.6-liter) fuel tank, which has delivered a range of 346 miles (557 kilometers) in testing, Honda says.
Design features like a tall handlebar contribute to a classic upright dual-sport riding position for enhanced control and rider comfort, Honda says. Comfort gets an additional boost from the foot pegs’ vibration-dampening rubber isolators. MX-inspired shrouds and a front fender patterned after those on Honda CRF Performance models combine with a sleek headlight with sharp lines and angles to to give the bike a sporty look. The steel-constructed rear rack, meanwhile, provides a touch of practicality by enabling riders to haul books, luggage, and more. Optional saddlebags and a tank bag let riders add even more cargo space as needed.
Ready For Off-Road Riding
The XR150L’s steel-constructed frame is designed to withstand the pounding of off-road riding, while its front and rear suspension will help absorb bumps and rocks on dirt roads and trails. The Pro-Link single-shock rear suspension has 5.9 in. (150 mm) of travel, and the 310-mm telescopic front fork has 7.1 in. (180 mm). Honda says the rear suspension system’s rates range from providing supple action over small bumps and ripples to resisting bottoming and maintaining rear-wheel control over rougher surfaces. The 19-in. front and 17-in. rear wheels help the bike help combat potholes and rough off-road terrain while preserving stability at speed, Honda says.
