Although the 1000SX is definitely a Kawasaki Ninja, with the styling and 1,043-cc engine one would expect, it’s not strictly a sport bike according to the manufacturer. It’s also a sport touring model with room for a passenger. Available in Metallic Matte Graphenesteel Gray (a departure from last year’s Metallic Carbon Gray) and Metallic Diablo Black, the Ninja 1000SX benefits from electronics management technology used by the Kawasaki Racing Team in the WorldSBK superbike championship series.

    Smart Rider Assistance

The engine powering the 1000SX is a liquid-cooled, four-stroke, DOHC, 16-valve, inline four-cylinder configured for midrange performance. It is digitally fuel injected with aspiration from four 38-millimeter (1.5-inch) Keihin throttle bodies with electronic throttle valves and oval sub-throttles. The motorcycle uses a six-speed transmission and a sealed chain final drive.

A Bosch inertial measurement unit and Kawasaki software continually ascertain the Ninja 1000SX’s position and motion, which enables technologies such as Kawasaki Traction Control. KTRC aims to anticipate and avoid slippage, taking the user-selected Power Mode (full or 70% power) into consideration. The Bosch IMU also facilitates the Kawasaki Cornering Management Function, which helps the rider navigate corners and curves.

The Kawasaki Intelligent anti-lock Brake System attempts to help the rider maintain control during sudden or hard braking. The Kawasaki Quick Shifter feature allows for clutchless upshifting and downshifting. The Ninja 1000SX also features an assist and slipper clutch, which lightens the clutch pull and mitigates rear wheel chatter during rapid downshifts. The clutch grip is adjustable for hand size.

    Precision Components

The aluminum-framed Ninja 1000SX has a curb weight of just under 514 pounds (233 kilograms), so acceleration with the 1,043-cc engine is lively, to say the least. Kawasaki likewise gives the bike the firm handling of its sport heritage. Its 41-mm inverted front fork offers stepless adjustability of its compression damping, rebound damping, and spring preload. The rider can remotely adjust the rebound and preload of the horizontal back-link rear suspension as needed. Wheel travel is 4.7 in. (119 mm) in front and 5.7 in (145 mm) in the back.

The 1000SX wears Bridgestone BATTALAX Hypersport S22 tires, which Kawasaki says provide both dry and wet grip and well as light handling. The 17-inch (432-mm) tires’ sizes are 120/70 ZR17 in front and 190/50 ZR17 in the rear. The Ninja’s ABS-enabled disc brakes include 300-mm (11.8-in.) dual rotors and four-piston calipers in the front, with a 250-mm (9.8-in.) disc and a single-piston caliper beside the back wheel. The bike has 32.3 in. (820 mm) of seat height and a 5-gallon (18.9-liter) fuel tank.

    Ninja DNA

Visually, the 1000SX has chin spoilers similar to those on the Ninja H2 and ZX-10R. Its LED headlights have low and high beams, and its turn signals are integrated into its bodywork. Before a ride, the operator can adjust the angle of the windshield without needing tools.

Kawasaki gives the Ninja 1000SX a color panel of digital gauges. The system is Bluetooth-enabled and supports the manufacturer’s RIDEOLOGY mobile device app. Accessories include side-mount cases and a DC power outlet in the dash area.
