New Indian Motorcycle FTR Championship Edition Honors Wrecking Crew Team’s Flat Track Racing Winning Streak

American Flat Track describes flat-track racing as a “hyper-competitive, adrenaline-fueled” sport featuring custom-built, production-based motorcycles that hit 140 mph (225 km/h) in the straights and 90 mph (145 km/h) in the curves. That tells you a bit about what’s in store if you climb onto Indian Motorcycle’s gorgeous, limited-edition FTR Championship Edition motorcycle, inspired by the company’s FTR750 racer. The Polaris-owned manufacturer designed the bike as a celebration of its Indian Wrecking Crew’s five-straight AFT Progressive Manufacturer’s Championships, won from 2017 to 2021.

“While the 2022 FTR lineup optimizes the FTR’s on-road performance, the FTR Championship Edition reignites our flat-track racing legacy and celebrates the Wrecking Crew’s historic success,” says Indian Motorcycle Vice President Aaron Jax. “Although this limited-edition bike is a commemorative show piece, it’s also an on-road ripper that performs in the twisties as well as turns heads on city streets.”

A Championship Pedigree

Indian will produce just 400 FTR Championship Edition bikes, which sport an authentic Carbon Fiber with Racing Graphics color scheme and a commemorative bezel with graphics that denote each championship season. Premium components include carbon fiber airbox covers and a matching seat cowl, front fender, and headlight nacelle. The bike also boasts Akrapovič exhaust, a fully adjustable inverted telescopic cartridge fork with 150 millimeters of front travel, and a piggyback rear shock.

The bike’s six-speed liquid-cooled 1,203-cc V-twin engine delivers 120 horsepower (89.5 kilowatts) and 87 pounds-foot (118 newton-meters) of torque. Its race-inspired, Cast Red 19-inch front and 18-in. rear wheels wear Dunlop DT3-R radial street tires featuring flat-track-style tread. In the middle of the ProTaper flat-track aluminum handlebars is a 4.3-inch digital touchscreen display with integrated Ride Command software. Riders can choose from Sport, Standard, and Rain riding modes, and Indian includes wheelie control with rear-lift mitigation, lean angle stability control, traction control, and ABS with cornering pre-control.

The Wrecking Crew

The 2022 Indian Wrecking Crew team includes Jared Mees, the 2021 AFT SuperTwins champion, and Briar Bauman, a two-time SuperTwins champion. Its newest member is Shayna Texter-Bauman, the winningest rider in AFT Singles history and arguably dirt track racing’s most popular rider, AFT says. The 2022 Progressive AFT season kicked off March 10th with the Volusia Half-Mile I at Volusia Speedway Park in Florida.
