Kawasaki recently unveiled the 2022 versions of its Versys 650 and 650 LT adventure touring motorcycles, which for the first time come equipped with Kawasaki Traction Control (KTRC). Kawasaki says the two-mode advanced traction control system weighs various factors to gain a real-time picture of riding conditions in order to act before slippage surpasses the range for optimal traction. The upgraded Versys 650 and 650 LT also gain a new 4.3-inch TFT color instrumentation panel with smartphone connectivity, new front cowl styling patterned after the larger Versys 1000, new LED headlights, and a new four-way adjustable windshield.

    Maximum Traction

The Versys 650 for 2022 is available in Metallic Spark Black/Metallic Flat Spark Black or Candy Lime Green/Metallic Flat Spark Black/Metallic Spark Black color schemes, while the 650 LT comes in Metallic Spark Black/Metallic Flat Black. Both models feature an upright riding position that comes via a high-tech, long-travel suspension with an adjustable front Showa fork and a rear Showa shock.

The bikes are powered by a fuel-injected 649-cc parallel-twin engine, 5.5-gallon (21-liter) fuel tank, and a linear-action anti-lock brake system (ABS). The standard 17-inch cast-aluminum wheels are similar to those on Kawasaki Ninja ZX 6R and ZX 10R models. The 650 LT adds weather- and wind-protecting hand guards and a 1-cubic-foot (28-liter) KQR hard saddlebag set with quick-release and toolless removability to the feature set. The bikes have a 483-pound (219-kilogram) curb weight, a seat height of 33.3 in. (84.6 centimeters), a 55.7-in. (141.5-cm) wheelbase, and an 85.2-in. (216.4-cm) overall length.

    Upgrades For 2022

KTRC’s two modes let Versys 650 and 650 LT riders adjust the system’s settings to match riding conditions and preference. Kawasaki says Mode 1 is the least intrusive; it assists in managing traction during cornering and facilitates acceleration out of corners. Mode 2 reduces engine output if the system detects excessive wheel spin so that the tire can achieve maximum grip. A handlebar-located switch lets riders turn the KTRC system off if desired.

The new full-color TFT instrumentation screen features a black or white rider-selectable background, automatic screen brightness adjustment, and Bluetooth compatibility with the RIDEOLOGY mobile app. Display functions include a digital speedometer, a bar-style tachometer, a gear position indicator, a shift lamp, a fuel gauge, an odometer, dual trip meters, a current and average fuel consumption display, a remaining fuel range indicator, coolant temperature indicator, and service and oil change reminders. The bike comes with a sporty new LED headlight and taillight, and a four-way adjustable windshield matched to the redesigned upper cowl.
