Indian Motorcycles debuted its now-iconic Indian Chief bike way back in 1921. To commemorate the Chief’s 100-year anniversary, Indian has introduced three “totally reimagined” Chief, Chief Bobber, and Super Chief models in base and premium trims to its 2022 lineup. Deliveries to U.S. and Canadian dealerships will begin in April. Indian President Mike Dougherty says although the bikes offer the mechanical simplicity and attitude of classic American V-twin cycles, they also pack modern sophistication and features. “We could not be more thrilled to bring this new platform into our lineup,” he says.

    Meet The New Chief

Aimed at slightly different rider types, the 2022 Chief is available in Chief and Chief Dark Horse, Bobber and Bobber Dark Horse, and Super Chief and Super Chief Limited trims with various color scheme options. Scores of features and accessories related to performance, style, and comfort are on tap, including air intake, muffler, exhaust tip, rack, windshield, handlebar, backrest, and other options.

All variants use a Thunderstroke engine and feature a “timeless, simplistic” steel tube frame. The Chief provides a “stripped-down riding experience,” the Chief Bobber a “muscled-up” front end and solo bobber seat, and the Super Chief provides saddlebags and a windshield for longer rides. Along with a 4-gallon (15.1-liter) fuel tank, the bikes feature a bobbed rear fender, dual exhaust, LED lighting, Pirelli Night Dragon tires, cruise control, and three riding modes (sport, standard, and tour). “We wanted to capture a timeless look that never goes out of style, and looks beautiful whether naked or fully dressed,” says Ola Stenegard, director of industrial design.

    Trim Options

Base Chief, Chief Bopper, and Super Chief configurations use a 111-cubic-inch (1,819-cc) Thunderstroke 111 powerplant with six-speed transmission. They provide an analog gauge, chrome and matte finishes, and ABS (anti-lock braking system) options. The Chief Dark Horse, Bobber Dark Horse, and Super Chief Limited premium models have a 116-cubic-in. (1,901-cc) Thunderstroke 116 engine, include ABS standard, and feature premium gloss black or chrome finishes. Premium models also include a 4-inch display supporting the RIDE COMMAND system that provides access to bike and ride information, wireless communication, turn-by-turn navigation, music and phone control, and other functionality.
