Harley-Davidson 'Speed of Sound' Video Highlights All-Electric LiveWire & Future Of Motorcycle Drag Racing
Harley-Davison has released a 10-minute, 35-second video that chronicles the preparation and rigors that go into winning an NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle championship. The film also shows off The Motor Company’s LiveWire all-electric motorcycle, including discussions about how electric vehicle propulsion technology will alter motorcycle drag racing in the future. “Science of Speed” features the 10-time championship Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines drag racing team, and team members Eddie Krawiec, Andrew Hines, and Angelle Sampey sharing their experiences of navigating motorcycles down a quarter-mile dragstrip.
Twist & Go
“Science of Speed” draws comparisons between the all-new 2020 LiveWire and a 2020 Harley-Davidson FXDR. With a top speed of 110 mph (177 km/h), the LiveWire’s most notable feature arguably is the instant-torque “twist-and-go” acceleration delivered by the H-D Revelation powertrain. Harley says the permanent magnet electric motor, which sits below the battery to help lower the overall center of gravity, can produce 100% of its rated torque instantly from stop. This enables the LiveWire to move from 0 to 60 mph (0 to 100 km/h) in 3 seconds and from 60 to 80 mph (100 to 129 km/h) in 1.9 seconds.
The bike also features a rigid aluminum frame, adjustable suspension components, and seven Ride Modes (four pre-programmed and three customized). A 146-mile (235-kilometer) range is supported in urban settings, and owners can recharge the battery via an onboard Level 1 charger from standard outlets or use a Level 3 DC Charge station for a 100% charge in an hour.
Breaking Records
Harley-Davidson says the bike’s instant torque could have a profound impact on competitive motorcycle racing. “The racers are immediately aware of what the future of fast can bring: more time for preparation before launch; thrilling, instant acceleration; and seamless speed to the finish line,” the company explains. Sampey, a three-time Pro Stock champion, recently set records with the LiveWire for elapsed time and top speed by an electric-powered production motorcycle. She covered an eighth-mile run in 7.017 seconds and a quarter-mile stretch in 11.156 seconds at 110.35 mph (177.6 km/h).
