The spirit of the classic Honda Z50 dirt bike lives on in the Honda CRF50F. The 2020 edition of this youth-oriented starter bike escaped into the wild in July with a low 21.6-inch (549-millimeter) seat height, 10-inch (254-millimeter) wheels, and a list price of $1,549. It’s marketed as a sporty, reliable, kid’s first bike, but of course smaller adults can have fun on the trails with it, too.

    Features & Engine

Apart from its obvious size and scale—the little 36-inch (914-millimeter) wheelbase Honda weighs just 110 pounds (50 kilograms) fully fueled—the CRF50F has other kid-friendly features to recommend it. There’s an automatic clutch to simplify gear shifting, giving newbie riders one less thing to worry about as they learn. There are also parental control features such as a keyed ignition and an adjustable throttle limiter bolt to keep an adult in charge of access to the bike and its level of power.

The steel-framed CRF50F comes with an air-cooled, four-stroke, one-cylinder, 49cc engine with 10.0:1 compression. The two-valve, SOHC (single overhead camshaft) motor uses a 13-millimeter carburetor of the piston-valve type. CD (capacitive discharge) ignition sparks the magic. Honda touts the engine’s reliability honed over decades of R&D, both in the real world and on the drawing board, and reports that it complies with current EPA emissions standard for trail and dirt bikes.

    Getting Physical

The chain-drive CRF50F has an inverted telescopic fork up front, while a single-shock, Pro-Link rear suspension helps to keep the tail on the trail. Suspension travel is 3.5 inches (89 millimeters) in front and 2.8 inches (71 millimeters) out back. Front and rear drum brakes provide simple, reliable control for small riders.

Geometry-wise, Honda builds the CRF50F with 25 degrees of rake (caster), 1.3 inches (32 millimeters) of trail, and 5.8 inches (147 millimeters) of ground clearance. It can hold up to 0.7 gallon (2.6 liters) of gasoline.

    Find The Right Honda

Of course, dirt bikes are less about numerical specs and more about fun. In Honda’s own words, the CRF50F is “friendly, cute, approachable, classic, beloved,” and “pocketsize,” as the accompanying photos demonstrate. It comes with a 6-month, transferable, limited warranty.
