Yamaha Motor’s Sales Up In First Half Of 2018
Yamaha recently released its earnings report for the first half of its fiscal year, revealing that it earned 851.3 billion yen (roughly $7.67 billion) in net sales, which was 23.3 billion yen ($210 million) more than it earned over the same period last year. Yamaha had an operating income of 82.2 billion yen ($741 million), which was up 0.1 percent, an ordinary income of 79.3 billion yen ($715 million), which was down 5 percent, and a net income of 57 billion yen ($514 million), which was down 6.3 percent. Yamaha also points out in the report that the exchange rate at the time was 109 yen for every U.S. dollar and 132 yen for every euro.
Motorcycle Business
A major driver of Yamaha’s success in the first half of its fiscal year was its motorcycle business. Net sales for motorcycles were 515.4 billion yen ($4.64 billion), an increase of 1.2 percent. (The company saw a decrease in operating income of 7.5 percent.) The net sales increase was thanks to India, Indonesia, and the Philippines, which are considered emerging markets for Yamaha; the company attributes its operating income drop to lower overall sales in Europe and other existing markets.
Power Products Business
Yamaha’s Power Products business segment, which includes all-terrain vehicles, saw an increase in net sales of 71.3 billion yen ($643 million), which was an increase of 6.5 percent. The business’s operating income also went up by 18.6 percent to 1.1 billion yen ($9.9 million). Yamaha attributes this success to selling more ATVs and golf carts in the first half of the fiscal year.
