Suzuki’s New Motorcycle Manufacturing Plant Nearly Complete

Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. (SMAI) will soon complete work on a new manufacturing plant in Hamamatsu, Japan, which is where the Suzuki Motor Corporation headquarters is located. That close proximity played a major role in the company choosing the location. The new 700,000-square-foot (65,032-square-meter) full-service facility sits on 40 acres (16.2 hecatres) of land and will handle everything from research and development to engineering, engine production, and vehicle assembly. Suzuki says this will help improve its overall manufacturing efficiency to deliver motorcycles to customers more quickly.

“This action underlines Suzuki’s commitment to engineering and manufacturing motorcycles at the forefront of performance and innovation,” said Kerry Graeber, vice president MC/ATV sales and marketing for SMAI, in a statement. “Suzuki Motor Corporation in Japan, along with Suzuki Motor of America, Inc., will be even better equipped to meet the unique needs of American motorcycle buyers.”

Five Years In The Making

Suzuki’s new manufacturing plant is essentially a consolidation of three other locations in Japan. There was an engine production facility in Takatsuka, a motorcycle assembly plant in Toyokawa, and an engineering and development facility in Ryuyo. The project started in 2014 and will now become the primary manufacturing facility for Suzuki motorcycles sold in the United States. Suzuki will still use its plant in Rome, Georgia, in the U.S. to build its all-terrain vehicles. The company recently released all-new KingQuad 500 and KingQuad 750 ATVs back in May.
