Harley-Davidson’s LiveWire Is Available For Pre-Order
Harley-Davidson showed off its electric portfolio this week at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The Motor Company announced pre-order availability and pricing for the LiveWire, its first electric production motorcycle. It also unveiled two other new electrified two-wheeler concepts.
“We’re at a historic juncture in the evolution of mobility, and Harley-Davidson is at the forefront,” said President and CEO Matt Levatich.
A Real Live Wire
The new LiveWire electric bike is available for pre-order for $29,799 USD. Production units should arrive in fall 2019 in North America and Western Europe.
The LiveWire will have a range of about 110 miles. You can charge it overnight on a standard household outlet, or in an hour or two at a Level 3 DC Fast Charge station.
Performance will be brisk, Harley-Davidson says, as the H-D Revelation electric powertrain can deliver 100% of its always-available torque with a twist of the throttle. The permanent magnet electric motor can propel the LiveWire from 0 to 60 mph in less than 3.5 seconds. There is no clutch to manipulate and no gear shifting to worry about, which simplifies the learning curve for new riders.
For handling purposes, Harley-Davidson lowered the LiveWire’s center of gravity by tucking the motor down under the battery. The company also added antilock braking, traction control, regenerative engine braking, and purpose-built Michelin tires.
Key to the LiveWire will be the new H-D Connect LTE cellular connectivity subscription service, which will be free for the first year. A smartphone app will let you see your bike’s remaining battery charge, available range, nearby charging station locations, and charging progress. H-D Connect will also include tamper alerts and GPS tracking for stolen bikes. The bike itself will come with touchscreen control including navigation and music management.
New Concepts, New Markets
The two concept bikes Harley-Davidson debuted were also electrified models. One was designed for the city, and the other for both on- and off-road use. They’re part of the company’s “More Roads to Harley-Davidson” plan to appeal to new riders.
“These two concepts are further statements toward … our commitment to lead in the electric mobility space that begins this fall with the production 2020 LiveWire,” said Levatich.
